How to care for your musical Instrument

To promote a healthy, germ-free environment:
Spray the room (and especially door knobs) with Lysol after each class. Wash your own hands frequently and avoid putting hands near face. Village parents may be willing to wipe things down with wipes. Be very diligent about cleaning instruments after each class. Use the following tips to best clean Kindermusik instruments.

Natural Wood (clear finish) instruments
Use a dry towel for daily cleanings. Quickly wipe with non-bleach/no alcohol antibacterial wipes such as Clorox wipes. Do not soak the surface grain too heavily or soak or immerse in water. Use "wooden salad bowl" finish oil to replenish the surface. You can find this oil in kitchen stores but please note that some of these oils may contain nut oils so beware of allergies. You can also use baby oil.

Painted Wood instruments (excluding slide whistle)
Use a dry towel for daily cleanings. Quickly wipe with non-bleach/no alcohol antibacterial wipes such as Clorox wipes. Do not soak the surface grain too heavily, rub, or soak or immerse in water.

Kindermusik Wooden Slide Whistles
Since these "wind instruments" may build up moisture, leave these out to "air dry" with the stem pulled out in the furthest position. This way, the instrument will dry out and not accumulate moisture. Immediately after playing, do not place the instrument in its case, as this may inhibit the instrument to breathe naturally (as in wood recorders). If you see any "mold" or "mildew" growth, do not worry. This can be easily alleviated by a quick dip of the instrument in a light bleach solution of 10 percent bleach 90 percent water. Air-dry completely after dipping in the bleach solution.

Kindermusik Dulcimer
Like most stringed instruments, you need not "clean" these except to remove dust from the fretboard. To do this, use a dry dust free cloth and wipe the fretboard down, carefully around the frets, as the edges can grab onto the cloth. Avoid the machine head area as the string ends can be quite sharp and the cloth can get twisted into the machine head assembly. No water or moisture at all should be used as the fretboard can be ruined by moisture.

Metal instruments
Wipe with antibacterial wipes such as Clorox wipes or a bleach/water solution*. Allow to air dry thoroughly or lightly pat dry. Do not soak or immerse in water.

Scarves
Place in low-heated dryer for 10 minutes after each use. When washing is necessary, wash in a lingerie bag in mild detergent on gentle cycle using warm or cold water only.

Village Baby Bells
Wash by hand or in a lingerie bag on gentle cycle in warm or cold water only (not hot). Use a mild soap and allow to hang dry to avoid having the Velcro curl. Do not put in dryer, use spray disinfectant, antibacterial wipes, or other chemical products since they may cause the brass bells to discolor.

Village Mirrors
Hand wash with cool water and mild soap on mirror side only. Do not scrub. Lightly pat dry. Do not put in dishwasher.

Kindermusik Egg Shakers
Wipe with antibacterial wipes such as Clorox wipes or a bleach/water solution. Egg shakers are not watertight so do not immerse in water.

Village Chime balls
Wipe with antibacterial wipes such as Clorox wipes. Do not use a bleach/water solution as this will discolor the thread and the material. Do not wash in machine.

* Bleach/water solution: North Carolina Association for the Education of Young Children standards for cleaning surfaces or items that go into a child's mouth are: 9 parts water to 1 part bleach. Stronger solution may damage instruments.

Replacing Dulcimer Strings

• Turn the machine head (top of the neck) to loosen the bad string from the machine head.

• After the string is totally out of the hole in the machine head, pull the string towards the bottom of the instrument to loosen it from the screw.

• Take the loop holding the string off of the screw. If the other string loop is on top of the broken string's loop, loosen the string by following the first step and then slip off that string first, then the other.

• Replace the string by placing the loop end over the screw. Hold the string taunt and place the other end of the string in the empty machine head's hole in the center of the shaft.

• Tighten the string by turning the machine head until the string is wound around the shaft. You are now ready to tune the instrument.
